video of one of the last large-scale groups of Soldiers of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, leaving Fort Knox, Ky., for Afghanistan Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011. The Soldiers of the 3/1 IBCT, also known as the Duke Brigade, are heading to eastern Afghanistan for a one-year deployment. Their mission will be to assist the Afghan National Security Forces in protecting the Afghan people, neutralizing the insurgency, and setting the conditions necessary for successful transition of regional control to the Afghan government. Col. Christopher Toner, 3/1 commander, was among the Soldiers on the flight; and is confident in his Soldiers' ability to complete their mission. "There comes a stage in the deployment cycle where you're feeling confident in yourself and you want to deploy and assume the mission," he said. "We're at that stage right now." The brigade deployed its first Soldiers in mid-December, and will continue to send groups over through next week. This is the largest deployment seen at Fort Knox since 1942, garrison officials said.
