The whole thing is the invented campaign of the GameMaster, and the players don't know anything about the story or the setting in which it happens, until it arises in the course of the game.

And whenever you have a situation like this, there's always a player who insists they know what's going on and what all the invented words mean, despite all evidence to the contrary.

Another convention we're borrowing from DM of the Rings is that NPCs speak with the same yellow-tinted word balloons as the voice of the GM."
